It is aimed mainly at final-year honours students and graduate students, but it goes beyond this level, and all serious mathematicians and academic libraries should own a copy Would you like to tell us about a lower price? This book gives an introduction to probability and its many practical application by providing a thorough, entertaining account of basic probability and important random processes, covering a range of important topics.
Emphasis is on modelling rather than abstraction and there are new sections on sampling and Markov chain Monte Carlo, renewal-reward, queueing networks, stochastic calculus, and option pricing in the Black-Scholes model for financial markets.
In addition, there are almost exercises and problems relevant to the material. Solutions can be found in One Thousand Exercises in Probability. Read more Read less. Discover Prime Book Box for Kids.

As many reviewers have pointed out, this book may be too advanced for a beginner student, but it is truly the best for a graduate student or anyone else with solid background in Mathematics and grimmetf knowledge of Probability.
Ten years later I still use it; just a few weeks ago I needed to familiarize myself with Brownian bridges and it took me only 10 minutes with the book to get all I need to know – the concepts, the formulas, the applications – to the extent I could explain it to my teammates. I wouldn’t recommend this book sfirzaker the introduction to probability, but for a serious student of mathematics this is a great book to further the understanding of probability and prepare for advanced studies in Stochastic Calculus.
Should have read all the reviews before buying this book. As many others have said, this is more akin to a reference book. I am currently self studying and this book does not give you any foundation to work from, and the exercise questions require knowledge that hasn’t been introduced previously.
The material is poorly explained for someone who has no background in probability. Can’t compare it to other probability textbooks because so far it is my only book on the subject. But very few math books that I have read can compare to this one in terms of knowledge and enjoyment. One person found this helpful. The book could be difficult for a beginner because it presents abstract probability theories with concise proofs and explanations. However, I keep coming back to the book when I want to refresh my understanding of theories.
The more I read the book, the more I appreciate it. If one thinks about a theories for a while and understands them, one finds that the proofs in the book are well presented because the proofs just show the essence of these theories.
One does not need to waist a lot of time to read through and understand. For example in the book, the Central Limit Theorem which is used in Monte Carlo Simulation for generating draws from a probability distribution only has a few lines of proof.
These few lines of proof is equivalent to a long paragraph of writing. This is the best and the hardest book on probability I have ever seen. It is extremely dense and rigorous so it requires the reader to think hard. It has plenty of examples which are often so complex to present sub topics on their own. This is not a book for people who need only basics. A challenging read and not a first course. This was my text at a school on par with MIT and we were expected to know some algebra and analysis.
The book begins with formalism probability measures and sigma-fields and asks for application almost immediately–there is little hand-holding.
A good choice for the serious student–that is, one who does not simply put the book down after page three because it’s “too hard. Great book and was shipped super quick! Could be a little hard for entry-level. The textbook describes some very difficult concepts, especially for an entry-level probability class. Sometimes I find the exercise not necessarily related to the content in the book personal opinion only.
But in general this is a good textbook. See all 37 reviews.
